The Mad Duchess is a short opera with a libretto by Hamish Robinson based on the story of Elizabeth Monk, the Duchess of Albemarle. Pursued by numerous suitors, eager to get their hands on her vast fortune, she eventually married Ralph, Earl of Montagu, who sought to model his own Boughton House in Northamptonshire after the palace of Versailles.
